Practice

When you both feel ready and clear what you're about to do, alternate these practice-roles of speaker and listener:

Speaker

Pick a safe subject you feel some energy about now.
Be you! Forget this is an exercise as much as you can. Talk naturally for 3-5 minutes, expressing your ideas and feelings; then…
Use your awareness skill to give your listening partner constructive, specific feedback on:

The R(espect)-message you got from them as they listened (“I’m 1-up,' “I’m 1-down,' or “we’re equal”), and..
how you got it (words, voice dynamics, and/or nonverbal behaviors);
How clearly you felt (a) heard, (b) understood, and (c) genuinely accepted (vs. judged or ignored) by them - e.g. “On a 1-to-10 scale, I felt..”); Was this 'effective communication' for you?
What you noticed about (a) any changes in your E(motion)-level as you talked together; and (b) your partner's awareness bubble (1-person, 2-person, or no-person) during the practice; And say...
If you felt interrupted by your partner's restatements of your thoughts and feelings; and..
What you liked about her or his listening style - e.g. eye contact, body posture, voice tone, comments, brevity, attitude, focus, timing, ..; and…
Anything specific you feel would improve your partner's empathic-listening skill.

Listener

Decide to use empathic listening: i.e. consciously choose to put your views, values, and needs aside just now. Recall: listening isn’t (necessarily) agreeing!

Make a silent “Respect check” on how you honestly feel about your partner’s dignity, worth, and needs relative to yours, now - genuine mutual respect, or other. 'Other' may indicate a false self controls you.

Give yourself permission to experiment, feel awkward, and take risks here - try something different! The goal is learning, not being perfect!

Use brief verbal insertions (periodically summarizing the speaker’s thoughts, feelings, and needs) vs. interruptions (shifting to your agenda);

Skeet is one of the three major disciplines of competitive clay shooting. The others are trap shooting and sporting clays. There are several types of skeet, including one with Olympic status (often called Olympic skeet or international skeet) and many with only national recognition.

General principles[edit]

For the American version of the game, the clay discs are 4+5⁄16 inches (109.54 mm) in diameter, 1+1⁄8 inches (28.58 mm) thick, and fly a distance of 62 yards (57 m).

The international version of skeet uses a target that is slightly larger in diameter [(110±1) mm vs. 109.54 mm], thinner in cross-section [(25.5±.5) mm vs. 28.58 mm], and has a thicker dome center, making it harder to break. International targets are also thrown a longer distance from similar heights, at over 70 yards (64 m), resulting in higher target speed.

The firearm of choice for this task is usually a high-quality, double-barreled over and under shotgun with 26- to 30-inch barrels and very open chokes. Often, shooters will choose an improved cylinder choke (one with a tighter pattern) or a skeet choke (one with a wider pattern), but this is a matter of preference. Some gun shops refer to this type of shotgun as a skeet gun. Skeet chokes are designed to be a 30 inches (760 mm) circle at 21 yards (19 m) yards distance. Alternatively, a sporting gun or a trap gun is sometimes used. These have longer barrels (up to 34 inches) and tighter choke. Many shooters of American skeet and other national versions use semi-automatic shotguns and break-openover-and-under shotguns.

The event is in part meant to simulate the action of bird hunting. The shooter shoots from seven positions on a semicircle with a radius of 21 yards (19 m), and an eighth position halfway between stations 1 and 7. There are two houses that hold devices known as 'traps' that launch the targets, one at each corner of the semicircle. The traps launch the targets to a point 15 feet (4.6 m) above the ground and 18 feet (5.5 m) outside of station 8. One trap launches targets from 10 feet (3.0 m) above the ground ('high' house) and the other launches it from 3 feet (0.91 m) above the ground ('low' house).

At stations 1 and 2 the shooter shoots at single targets launched from the high house and then the low house, then shoots a double where the two targets are launched simultaneously but shooting the high house target first. At stations 3, 4, and 5 the shooter shoots at single targets launched from the high house and then the low house. At stations 6 and 7 the shooter shoots at single targets launched from the high house and then the low house, then shoots a double, shooting the low house target first then the high house target. At station 8 the shooter shoots one high target and one low target.

The shooter must then re-shoot his first missed target or, if no targets are missed, must shoot his 25th shell at the low house station 8. This 25th shot was once referred to as the shooter's option, as he was able to take it where he preferred. Now, to speed up rounds in competition, the shooter must shoot the low 8 twice for a perfect score.

History[edit]

Charles Davis and William Harnden Foster of Andover, Massachusetts invented skeet shooting. In 1920 Davis, an avid grouse hunter, and Foster, an avid hunter, painter, illustrator and author of 'New England Grouse Hunting', developed a game which was informally called 'Shooting around the clock'.^[2]^[3] The original course took the form of a circle with a radius of 25 yards with its circumference marked off like the face of a clock and a trap set at the 12-o'clock position. The practice of shooting from all directions had to cease, however, when a chicken farm started next door. The game evolved to its current setup by 1923 when one of the shooters, William Harnden Foster, solved the problem by placing a second trap at the 6-o'clock position and cutting the course in half. Foster quickly noticed the appeal of this kind of competition shooting, and set out to make it a national sport.^{[citation needed]} The game was introduced in the February 1926 issues of National Sportsman and Hunting and Fishing magazines, and a prize of 100 dollars was offered^{[by whom?]} to anyone who could come up with a name for the new sport. The winning entry was 'skeet', chosen by Gertrude Hurlbutt.^[4] The word 'skeet' allegedly derived from the Norwegian word for 'shoot' (skyte). During World War II the American military used skeet to teach gunners the principles of leading and timing on a flying target. The first National Skeet Championship took place in 1926.^[2] Shortly thereafter, the National Skeet Shooting Association formed.^[2] For his role in perfecting and developing the sport, William 'Bill' Foster was named as one of the first members to the National Skeet Shooters Association Hall of Fame in 1970, and is now known^{[by whom?]} as 'The Father of Skeet'.^[5]

Olympic skeet[edit]

Olympic and international skeet is one of the ISSF shooting events. It has had Olympic status since 1968, and, until 1992, was open to both sexes. After that year, all ISSF events have been open to only one sex, and so women were disallowed to compete in the Olympic skeet competitions. This was controversial because the 1992 Olympic Champion was a woman, Zhang Shan of China. However, women had their own World Championships, and in 2000, a female skeet event was introduced to the Olympic program.

In Olympic skeet, there is a random delay of between 0 and 3 seconds after the shooter has called for the target. Also, the shooter must hold his gun so that the buttstock is at mid-torso level until the target appears.

Another difference with American skeet is that the sequence to complete the 25 targets in a round of Olympic skeet requires shooters to shoot at doubles, not only in stations 1, 2, 6, and 7, as in American skeet, but also on 3, 4, and 5. Adobe PageMaker (formerly Aldus PageMaker) is a discontinued desktop publishing computer program introduced in 1985 by the Aldus Corporation on the Apple Macintosh.^[1] The combination of the Macintosh's graphical user interface, PageMaker publishing software, and the Apple LaserWriterlaser printer marked the beginning of the desktop publishing revolution. Ported to PCs running Windows 1.0 in 1987,^[2] PageMaker helped to popularize both the Macintosh platform and the Windows environment.^[3]^[4]

A key component that led to PageMaker's success was its native support for Adobe Systems' PostScript page description language. After Adobe purchased the majority of Aldus's assets (including FreeHand, PressWise, PageMaker, etc.) in 1994 and subsequently phased out the Aldus name, version 6 was released. The program remained a major force in the high-end DTP market through the early 1990s, but new features were slow in coming. By the mid-1990s, it faced increasing competition from QuarkXPress on the Mac, and to a lesser degree, Ventura on the PC, and by the end of the decade it was no longer a major force. Quark proposed buying the product and cancelling it, but instead, in 1999 Adobe released their 'Quark Killer', Adobe InDesign. The last major release of PageMaker came in 2001, and customers were offered InDesign licenses at a lower cost.

Aldus Pagemaker 1.0 was released in July 1985 for the Macintosh and in December 1986 for the IBM PC.^[5]^[6]
Aldus Pagemaker 1.2 for Macintosh was released in 1986 and added support for PostScript fonts built into LaserWriter Plus or downloaded to the memory of other output devices.^[7] PageMaker was awarded a Codie award for Best New Use of a Computer in 1986. In October 1986, a version of Pagemaker was made available for Hewlett-Packard's HP Vectra computers. In 1987, Pagemaker was available on Digital Equipment's VAXstation computers.^[6]
Aldus Pagemaker 2.0 was released in 1987. Until May 1987, the initial Windows release was bundled with a full version of Windows 1.0.3; after that date, a 'Windows-runtime' without task-switching capabilities was included.^[8]^[9] Thus, users who did not have Windows could run the application from MS-DOS.
Aldus Pagemaker 3.0 for Macintosh was shipped in April 1988.^[10] PageMaker 3.0 for the PC was shipped in May 1988^[11] and required Windows 2.0,^[12] which was bundled as a run-time version.^[13] Version 3.01 was available for OS/2 and took extensive advantage of multithreading for improved user responsiveness.
Aldus PageMaker 4.0 for Macintosh was released in 1990 and offered new word-processing capabilities, expanded typographic controls, and enhanced features for handling long documents.^[14] A version for the PC was available by 1991.
Aldus PageMaker 5.0 was released in January 1993.^[6]
Adobe PageMaker 6.0 was released in 1995, a year after Adobe Systems acquired Aldus Corporation.
Adobe PageMaker 6.5 was released in 1996. Support for versions 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, and 6.5 is no longer offered through the official Adobe support system. Due to Aldus' use of closed, proprietary data formats, this poses substantial problems for users who have works authored in these legacy versions.
Adobe PageMaker 7.0 was the final version made available. It was released 9 July 2001, though updates have been released for the two supported platforms since. The Macintosh version runs only in Mac OS 9 or earlier; there is no native support for Mac OS X,^[15] and it does not run on Intel-based Macs without SheepShaver. It does not run well under Classic, and Adobe recommends that customers use an older Macintosh capable of booting into Mac OS 9. The Windows version supports Windows XP, but according to Adobe, 'PageMaker 7.x does not install or run on Windows Vista.'^[16]

End of development[edit]

InDesign was the successor to PageMaker.

Development of PageMaker had flagged in the later years at Aldus and, by 1998, PageMaker had lost almost the entire professional market^[17] to the comparatively feature-richQuarkXPress 3.3, released in 1992, and 4.0, released in 1996. Quark stated its intention to buy out Adobe and to divest the combined company of PageMaker to avoid anti-trust issues. Adobe rebuffed the offer and instead continued to work on a new page layout application code-named 'Shuksan' (later 'K2'), originally started by Aldus, openly planned and positioned as a 'Quark killer'. This was released as Adobe InDesign 1.0 in 1999.^[18]^[19]

The last major release of PageMaker was 7.0 in 2001, after which the product was seen as 'languishing on life support'.^[20] Adobe ceased all development of PageMaker in 2004 and 'strongly encouraged' users to migrate to InDesign, initially through special 'InDesign PageMaker Edition' and 'PageMaker Plug-in' versions, which added PageMaker's data merge, bullet, and numbering features to InDesign, and provided PageMaker-oriented help topics, complimentary Myriad Pro fonts, and templates.^[21] From 2005, these features were bundled into InDesign CS2, which was offered at half-price to existing PageMaker customers.^[22]^[23]

No new major versions of Adobe PageMaker have been released since, and it does not ship alongside Adobe InDesign.

Reception[edit]

BYTE in 1989 listed PageMaker 3.0 as among the 'Distinction' winners of the BYTE Awards, stating that it 'is the program that showed many of us how to use the Macintosh to its full potential'.^[24]
